HOW TO APPLY TO BE A SWANKY GROUP INTERN

Looking to work with us and break into the fashion industry? Read on to discover more about the application process, the internship program and what we’re looking for.

You have no doubt heard the saying - everyone has to start from somewhere. For many of us at the Swanky Media Group. The starting process of breaking into the fashion industry began in the form of an internship, which then paved the way for full-time work. On this page, we will tell you exactly how you can start your journey with us, how to apply and answer your most frequently asked questions, including what we’re looking for, what you’ll take away, and how to prep for an interview.

What we’re looking for in our interns

As much as we encourage people from our relevant sectors of fashion, marketing or journalism, we also welcome those from all different backgrounds. Regardless of your background - if you are hard-working, have diligence and have ambitions to be successful, you are welcome to apply to our internship program.

On top of reaching our personal criteria and having an interest in the fashion industry, there are some aspects and skills that will separate you from the rest of the crowd. Whether you are proficient in using the latest technology such as Microsoft, or you like being handy with Photoshop. How to apply to the Program

Email all applications to info@swankygroup.com with the following requirements:

Please ensure that you put ‘Internship Application’ in the subject line of your email so it’s sorted into the correct inbox. Once you’ve contacted us, we’ll be in touch to fill out any missing information.

  1. Please email your resume, which should include all of your up-to-date relevant education, skills and experiences.

  2. Please email us a few samples of your work - whether this is a portfolio, writing, or links to any previously published work. These don’t need to be big stories and can include anything from idea pitches to essays you have completed during your time in education. For those in the physical category, your fashion portfolio or makeup portfolio will suit this requirement.

  3. Your availability, including a preferred start date and which days of the week you’ll be available.

  4. The type of internship you’re interested in. Though interns will work across all of our publications in some aspect, you can flag a preference on your email - which we will note and use to inform your schedule if you get the position.

If we are happy with your e-mail we will kick off the next stage - the interviewing process.

The interview process + how you should prepare

If we decide we’d like to interview you after reading your resume and samples of work, we will e-mail you to organise a time to meet you.

Interviews are always held virtually, as you or the team may be in a different county at the time of the arranged interview date. It will last approximately 20 to 30 minutes and will include questions about who you are, your passions and hobbies, and why you’re interested in working with us. If you need access arrangements such as a Sign Language Interpreter or something else to make your interview more accessible for you please get in touch at info@swankygroup.com.

We suggest that you familiarise yourself with the publications, the company and our history. Most importantly, we want to get an idea of your personality. At Swanky Media Group we are not just journalists or editors, film makers or photo editors - we are critics and trendsetters, scientists and fashionistas, creative minds all coming together as a team. Depending on what brand/publication/platform you are looking to specialise in an interest in that specialism is essential, but so is a keen awareness and understanding of politics, design, art, culture, and humanities at a basic but vital level.

There is no highly strict dress code for our interviews. However, we do ask that if you are unsure then smart casual is the best way to go. We also ask that as we want your interview to be comfortable as possible, that you dress in your own style and tastes.

Following on from your interview, we will get in touch to let you know if your application was successful or not. If it was not successful, do not worry as it does not reflect on the nature of your work - we encourage you to keep aiming and achieving great things.

How our internship is structured

Dependant on what days you are available (especially if you are studying) as well as what our calendar has in store, you will be assigned a number of weeks for you to complete - these weeks are varying depending on the individual. Ultimately, the internship all comes down to your availability. All interns will learn from the same program, learn the same skills and complete the same tasks.

What you will do as a Swanky Media Group Intern

All interns will learn the same program structure, understand the company and learn the same skills. However, depending on what brand/platform/publication specialism you want to look into, your tasks might be different to another intern on the program. All interns will start by being taught the basics of the magazine publishing industry - you’ll learn our online systems, sit in meetings, and get taught industry standard terms that you can carry out into the world. You will be given the opportunity to work across multiple occassions on photoshoots, productions and events.

By the end of your internship, we expect all of our interns to publish what we call a passion project - this could be a photoshoot, a piece of writing, a film or big feature - you will have time to work on this during your final weeks/days of your program.

What you will take away from an Internship at Swanky Media Group

We want to give our interns a mix of experiences - understanding the magazine industry but also having fun and unleashing your own creativity and skills of thinking outside the box. In the magazine industry, life can be fast-paced, hard-working and intense, but it also can be massively rewarding and full of opportunities to learn and grow, network, and expand your knowledge - all ready for getting into the field. Consider your time on our internship program as something as an introduction into the industry, one that you might carry on with in your future career as you navigate the world and the industry.
